Forest of Needwood High School: 1964 - 1985 (Rolleston Site) |
Thursday 10 January 1984, saw the start of a campaign to save The Forest from closure. Above is an aerial shot of “the forest” in the mid seventies. |
The Forest had a school population of approx 1100 pupils and was home to the biggest youth club in Staffordshire in the 70’s. The school also provided an excellent program of adult education. Photos of the demolition of the forest can be viewed at www.rolleston.org.uk/demolition, see also pre - demolition photos. |
In the run up to the 25th anniversary of official notice of closure, tutbury.org by kind permission of Staffordshire Newspapers, reproduces (for purely historical interest) the story of the campaign as reported by the Burton Daily Mail - including reports from former pupil, Karen Lockhart who was a journalist on The Mail in the 1980’s. |

Michael (Mick) Jones we believe came from Tutbury. |
During the 1960’s or 1970’s he emigrated to Rhodesia and at some point married Anne, probably, an English lady and had a daughter and possibly a son. |
In 1979 Mick was working in Bulowayo as a boiler fitter. This might have been his trade when living in the UK. |
He was a Territorial in the Rhodesian Army Engineers and died whilst on active service with them. It’s also a possibility that he may have been an Engineer in the British Army at some point before he emigrated. |
A group of Rhodesian Army veterans are anxious to make contact with Michael’s next of kin, or any extended family member, to inform them of their recent discovery in Mozambique of the burial place of him and his 16 colleagues who died when the Puma helicopter, in which they were flying was shot down. |
If anyone has any knowledge of the whereabouts of his family members or any nformation that might help to find them, then please contact Derry Freeman who is acting as the UK liaison in this matter, for the Puma 164 Association. |

Tutbury Centenarians |
Figures from the Department of Work & Pensions show that the number of 100 year olds is set to double in the next 10 years and will reach 280,000 by the year 2050. |
No doubt Tutbury will have its fair share of centenarians in the coming years. Did you know that the Clerk of Parish Charities has copies of the necessary paperwork in order for 100 year olds to receive a message from the queen on their 100th, 105th and subsequent birthdays. The paperwork is available from The Charity House, Duke Street, Tutbury DE13 9LE. Or alternatively contact this website. |
